What is procrastination and how do you combat it? Learn why coaches need coaches too.

Many people go through life knowing what they need to do but never get doing it. Take me for example. I am an author and life coach. Now many have the idea in their heads that such people are perfect. After all an author has written a book, a coach coaches other people through life. But authors are as imperfect human beings as anyone else. The reason for their book is the mess in their own lives. However the content of their book is usually based on how they got out of their mess. So you would expect such a writer to have a better handle on things.

Well, to be fair, they do. But even a lot of such coaches, like this one, find themselves in a situation where they realize that were they to coach themselves they would not have allowed this to continue without a prompt to change. You see, I moved home just a week ago, and as I was going through papers and notes to determine what I need to throw away I came across a list of things I wanted to complete. On that list was the completion of a course based on my book, a course which today is not completed. When I looked at the date I was shocked. It was dated exactly a year ago.

Why is this? Why do we put things off and neglect those things which we have consciously deemed important. You have done the same. We all do it, over and over. I believe there are many great and noble ideas in the minds of many people which never even make it onto paper, and many of those which do make it onto paper, in the form of notes, diagrams and tables, never get any further. And then there are those ideas which actually make it into some form of execution or production but get abandoned before completion.

Do you own one of these ideas? Are you putting off something just because its an idea? Are you listening to the voices in your head which say, “You will never be able to do that,” “No one will believe you,” “It costs too much money,” “It takes too much time,” or “That’s a nice idea. Maybe someone someday will realize it.” Or the big one in my case, “I must do some more work on that.” But without a definite plan which we are determined to follow that thing gets pushed aside, and before you know it a year or maybe years have gone by leaving the task undone.

This is where coaches come in, or for coaches, being part of a mastermind group. So what does a coach tell you in this situation? Here are some points which may help you to get unstuck and move your project forward. Or, if your idea is still stuck in your head, these can help you get it unstuck and moved forward into execution.

1. Determine what it is you really want? It is pointless engaging in an activity to realize an idea if you are not overly convinced that it is a good idea. It must be something you really, really want. And it must be something which YOU want. Don’t want for someone else. Pick your own dream.

2. Decide you are going to do all it takes to get what you want? Without a decision your idea will never get out of your head. It will stay stuck and may even dissolve into forgetfulness.

3. Decide to start now, today. If you don’t, watch out, that idea is fading already.

4. Make a list of the steps you must take to reach your goal, realize your dream or make your idea a reality. Really take the time to work on this point. What must happen before you can reach your goal? What determines that your goal has been reached? What is the first step to get you started?

5. Break down that first step into smaller chunks. Really get it down to what you must do right now, this minute, in order to strike off step 1 as done.

6. Do step 1. Do it now.

7. Write down your result. If necessary repeat step 1 and if necessary go back to points 4 and 5 to reassess where you need to begin.

8. Move on to the next step and keep going until you have completed your project, reached your goal or realized your dream.

9. Pick a new goal and start at point 1.

10. Share your success story.

Coaches are need to motivate people with these steps. Often we hold back because of fear, the fear of failure or of not knowing what the outcome will be. At Jim’s Network, the online coaching community, you will find a selection of coaches. You will also be able to chat with them on the integrated social network. Why not drop by and tell us how you’re doing at reaching your goals?

So now what? OK, so life is changing or has changed. It’s not like it used to be. It’ll never be the same again. What am I here for anyway? What’s this life all about?

I want answers. I want to find meaning to what is happening in my life. I am looking for direction. Or, what is it, that word, purpose!

Is there really a purpose to life? Can anyone truly say that they are here on this planet living in this body to fulfill a specific purpose?

Wow! That raises a bunch of questions. If I have a purpose, then who gave me that purpose? Who decided that is what I should be or do? And where and when was that decided?

Right, so let me get this straight. If this was decided before I got here then someone must have known I would be born. And if that is so then I must have known them. This is crazy. This is way out there. This is Moon and Mars stuff. So I had an existence before this life? So maybe I decided, or at least agreed, on what my purpose should be.

Then I was born and forgot all about it. Hmm. That means this was intended to be a journey of self discovery. But something in me, something about my make up, perhaps my DNA, would guide me towards that purpose.

But wait a minute. What if I can’t hear that inner guiding? What if I am totally unaware of any inner anything? Like what I am now. Hey, wait another minute. If I’m not getting the guidance then all this mess, this turmoil in my life right now, must be because I am off track, out of purpose. Oh my God! So getting back on track, getting the mess sorted out is to hear the inner guidance.

Great! Super! Just one problem. How on earth do I hear my inner guidance? That must be intuition, right? Whatever that is. So, there’s a part of me which knows what I am supposed to be doing here. And there is a part of me which doesn’t know. Now all I need to do is to connect the two parts and have the one communicate with the other.

Right, but how do I do that? Meditation! Now that sounds like a good way. But there are so many different forms of meditation. Now what is it that they all have in common? Stillness. Getting quiet. Quieting the mind. Getting the thoughts to shut up, or at least to be able to ignore them. Yes, then I will be able to hear my inner voice, that inner, spiritual part of me. Then I will have direction. I will know what is my purpose and I will receive inspiration and knowledge in order to begin pursuing my life’s purpose.

Have you ever felt like you don’t belong, you don’t fit in? Does your life constantly bang against the wall of conformity and crash against the common perception of life? This is what the authors of Wings of Change, Jim and Katharina Murdoch, were facing when their lives were turned upside down by unexpected events. How could life be any worse? Religion wasn’t meeting their needs, jobs weren’t meeting their needs, and to top it all along came a force which threatened to tear their family apart.

But they survived, not what could be said about their belief systems. “Our beliefs took a knock, a big knock,” says Jim. “One day we thought all our beliefs about God, life and the world were in order, then they were all turned on their head. Nothing has been the same since.” This was the turning point in their lives as they began to pursue the answers which had been avoiding them until now. And thus began a journey of discovery.

Their discoveries, uncovered independently as they each walked distinct paths, were complimentary and served to bind them together against all odds in spite of the forces threatening to pull them apart. Amazingly, their separate paths were uncovering the same truths and they found themselves agreeing more and more as they learned about God, the universe and consciousness.

The lessons they learned on their journey serve as an inspiration to the reader. You will read how they grew in awareness of who and what they are, how they learned to let go of old ways and paradigms and how to listen to their inner voice for guidance. The reader will benefit from their lessons of overcoming obstacles, daring to experiment with new ideas, realizing their purpose and acting on their new found truth to live the life they desire.

To help tell their story, Jim & Katharina have been inspired to adapt a parable to highlight each chapter. Using a family of geese they intriguingly blend in their life’s experiences into the geese’s life and their pursuit of happiness in learning the V formation and daring to fly south.

Katharina sums it up, “The readers will have fun. It’s inspiring and they will learn something for life. There is hope for anyone. No matter how bad a situation may be there is wonderful hope.”

Wings of Change – Discover a New Formation to Success will inspire you to take a new look at life and dare to be different.

Wow! Two months went by since I wrote here! We’ve been super busy with our book and our brand new business idea. I hope to get some pages up today on our new website to begin attracting a hungry audience. (You can check it out later when some content is there www.wingsofchangelife.com)
Our book is complete, yeehh! Well almost. I have just finished reading the final draft and now it goes to the editors and the printers. So expect our hardcover hot off the press mid-December.

We’re looking for a book dispatcher. If you know anyone who would be interested in storing and dispatching (as orders come in) about 2000 books from the UK please have them get in touch.

Yes, its that time of year again. This coming weekend we are flying off to Fort Lauderdale to join Bob Proctor and his friends on their second cruise, this time in the Caribbean. It’s going to be a wonderful week, full of teaching, sharing and a great fun time. We will of course be promoting our book as new authors – that’s exciting.

Would you like to pre-taste / pre-test part of our new workbook to accompany our book? We have developed a simple test to uncover your inner desire and discover your purpose, our Purpose Projection Profiler. If you would like to test this and you are willing to give some feedback, then just make a comment and ask for the PPP.

Have an exciting week and if you’re going to be on the Eurodam be sure and seek us out.

Its been a while since I posted and a WordPress upgrade messed up my old Theme, so i had to find a new one. In the meantime I have observed an interesting development in my own progress in pursuit of my purpose.

My wife and I had thought of building a center, a physical location, to offer our services. After some mentoring and self analysis we realized that, although the services are our hearts’ desire, the center was not. At the time we had thought the center was our vision and goal. Now, looking back, I realize that the feelings we had for the center and all what it involved were not exciting us. The idea did not resonate with our vision of helping others.

This got us rethinking about our purpose. Our purpose statement changed only slightly, as our desire is to teach others and help them release the old paradigms and live their life’s purpose. Now we are getting excited at our new vision – to bring our services to others wherever it is required without the restriction of a center. Soon our “center” will be a web portal, backed by our upcoming book “Wings of Change”, where we will offer our various services online and offline.

So what can we all learn from this? It is important to be in tune with your purpose. If it doesn’t FEEL good then reexamine your motives and plans. Is what you are doing exciting you? Are your plans resonating with your vision, in that they excite you just to think of it. That feeling in the stomach is the result of your intuition and is to be heeded. Does it feel right? Then do it. Maybe it doesn’t feel wrong, as in our case, but if it doesn’t lift your level of expectation then really sit down and analyze it. Is this what you really want to do? Does it expand your vision?

Lets not get trapped by business in doing things related to our goals if they are really getting in the way and hindering us reaching our goals. Find the thing that moves you closer to your dream and do that. Have you had any similar experiences? Why not leave a comment and tell us about it.

If you would like to learn about writing your purpose statement, ask me for Bob Proctor’s article on “Purpose, Vision and Goals”.

Why do you like doing certain things more than others? Why do some things interest you and some things don’t interest you at all? Have you noticed that when you do the things you enjoy doing you feel better and you actually feel somehow complete? Have you also noticed the conflict between what you enjoy doing and what life “demands” you should be doing? If you’ve experienced this then you are the victim of a society of pattern.

Patterns rule our modern society. We grow up to certain customs, adapt certain habits, eat certain foods at certain times, go to pre-school, school, college, university, get a job, get married, have kids, earn money, make debt – and in the midst of all this patterned life you try to find time for what you really like to do, sometimes called a hobby. Of course you enjoy your job and maybe it does bring some fulfillment, but why is your inner yearning to get out and do something else, something more enjoyable?

The reason you feel this way, the reason most people feel this way, the reason I have felt this way is one and the same. You feel frustrated because you are in the wrong boat! You are allowing Pattern to define your life instead of Purpose! A pattern is what you get when you pour ball-bearings into a tray and shake the tray so that all the ball-bearings fall into a pattern into the corner of the tray. You get a pattern when you spread some iron-filings onto a tray and place a magnet underneath. All the ball-bearings and all the iron-filings fall into a predefined pattern when an outside force is applied.

You are experiencing the same result. An outside force is causing you to fall into a predefined pattern. That outside force is society. Now for a lot of people that is a good thing. It gives them stability and sometimes security. Some people can’t cope with the pressure of following patterns and drop out of society. Then there are others who rise above it. Imagine one little ball-bearing refusing to fall into the pattern and jumps right up and out and away from the crowd and away from the outside force. The surrounding ball-bearings will be a little upset, because now there’s a hole in the pattern and they have to shuffle out of their routine pattern in order to fill the hole.

Now imagine you jumping out from your patterned environment and doing something different, something your really enjoy doing. Those around you, those with whom you have been falling into pattern, will get upset. You have upset their routine and now they must move around to adjust before they can settle back into their comfortable pattern. You can expect this reaction when you step out to follow your purpose.

And what is your purpose? In my next article I will give some tips which I believe will help you find your purpose. What is your opinion? Can we discover why we are here? If so how do you think we can uncover our purpose?
